Eco-design for sustainability by Wacom

In order to create a sustainable world, we are doing what we can as a manufacturer to make our products more environmentally friendly. For example, we have been considering the use of environmentally friendly materials, such as selecting applicable recycled materials for plastic parts of product housings and considering the use of FSC-certified paper for packaging. These efforts are now being applied to new LCD pen tablets products such as Wacom Cintiq Pro*, Wacom One*, and Wacom Movink.

On this page, we introduce our sustainability initiatives for each of these products.

Use of recycled plastic and metal for robustness

In order to create a sustainable world, we are doing what we can as a manufacturer to make our products more environmentally friendly. For example, we have been considering the use of environmentally friendly materials, such as selecting applicable recycled materials for plastic parts of product housings and considering the use of FSC-certified paper for packaging. Environmental consideration in packaging materials

Wacom uses FSC-certified paper for the cardboard used to package products and for instruction manuals. FSC certification is an international certification system that evaluates and certifies whether forests are being managed appropriately in consideration of the environment and local communities, and certifies that the paper is produced from forests that meet the standards. Wacom hopes to contribute to the prevention of illegal logging and sustainable forest management by actively using FSC-certified paper. Please click here to see the status of our use of FSC-certified paper for packaging materials.

Cotton is used in areas where FSC-certified paper is difficult to apply, for example, for wrapping products to prevent scratches on AC adapters, pens, and pen cases, which is made of plant-derived polylactic acid (PLA)*.

In the same way, we utilize a variety of environmentally friendly materials for packaging materials and try to avoid the use of petroleum-based plastics as much as possible.

For more information on our use of polylactic acid (PLA) and fossil fuel-derived plastics in packaging materials, please click here.

*Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biomass plastic made from starch and sugar derived from plants such as corn and sugarcane, and is said to be decomposed into water and carbon dioxide by the action of microorganisms even when it is disposed of in the soil.

Reducing product weight and packaging size

Downsizing and weight reduction of products leads to effective use of limited global resources. In addition to making products smaller and lighter, reducing the size of packaging can also reduce CO2 emissions during transportation.

Click here to see how each product has been downsized and package size reduced compared to the comparative model, and how transportation efficiency has been improved.

Environmental friendly printing

Soybean oil ink* is used for all printing on packaging and product manuals as much as possible, including the individual packaging of the main unit. Flexographic printing** is used for the packaging of the stands.
Click here to see the details on ink and printing method used for each product.

*Soybean oil ink is biodegradable and emits less VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) than inks using petroleum-based solvents, contributing to a better environment.

**Flexographic printing uses less ink, which in turn reduces the energy used to dry the ink, thus reducing CO2 emissions. It is also considered being an environment-friendly printing method because it can use water-based inks, including soybean oil inks, which emit less VOCs. Offset printing is used only for areas where fine printing is required (e.g. individual packages of the main body).
